Dalton Mumphrey is a saxophonist, flutist, composer, producer, and multidisciplinary artist whose work explores music as a conduit for spiritual inquiry, ancestral connection, and collective memory. Born in Torrance and raised in Murrieta, California, Mumphrey moved to Los Angeles in 2020 to attend the University of California, Los Angeles (UCLA).
Drawing inspiration from visionaries such as John Coltrane to Sona Jobarteh, his music blends improvisation with cultural storytelling and the rich traditions of the African diaspora. His compositions and performances move fluidly between structure and spontaneity, drawing from spiritual jazz, African musical traditions, and contemporary creative practice to explore questions of identity, memory, ritual, and liberation.
At the center of Mumphrey's artistic philosophy is the belief in sound as a living practice of remembrance—a means of coming closer to the source, honoring ancestral lineage, and cultivating presence. Through composed works, graphic scores, and free improvisation, Mumphrey seeks to create spaces where music becomes meditation, ritual, and dialogue and invites the audience to experience reflection, transcendence, and collective communion.
Mumphrey has performed with Thee Sacred Souls, Stevie Wonder, Arturo O’Farrill, Clayton Cameron, The House of Vibes, Trevor Lawrence Jr., Cheryl Keyes, Azar Lawrence, Munyungo Jackson, Paul Cornish, and Devin Daniels.
Mumphrey is currently at work on his debut recording, Ancestral.
